Tyler Hales, Head Coach

Tyler Hales enters his third season as Head Football Coach with a 15-10 career record. Before replacing legendary Coach and current Athletic Director Jeff Hutzler at the helm, he served as a member of the Torrey football staff as the Defensive Coordinator from 2010-2013 and as an assistant since 2007, coaching Quarterbacks and Defensive Backs. Hales helped lead the Torreys to their first 11-man CIF Championship in 2014, his first year as head coach. Coach Hales also spent 7 years as an assistant in Coach John Edman’s championship Torrey baseball program from 2007-2013. Additionally, Coach Hales teaches 8th Grade US History at Country Day, and he has taught in the Middle School since 2009. He worked in the Lower School for two years prior to moving to the Middle School. He has been a member of the American Football Coaches Association since 2008 and is also a member of the National Football Foundation. The Rotary Club of San Diego honored Coach Hales a Community Service Award in 2012.\

Coach Hales started at quarterback for Lexington High School, Lexington, Mass. and was named 1st team all-league QB and team MVP in 2001. Coach Hales was a 3-year letterman for a Minutemen baseball team that won 2 league championships. Coach Hales was selected to the 1st team all-league team as a first baseman in 2002. Coach Hales continued to excel at the collegiate level playing football and baseball at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. At free safety, Coach Hales was honored as the Colby Football Ironman in 2005 while leading the Mules to a 2nd place NESCAC finish, CBB championship (3-peat), and #2 ranking in New England. In baseball, Coach Hales was a 2-time captain, 2-time MVP and was selected as Colby’s Most Dedicated Player in 2006. Coach Hales graduated with honors from Colby in 2006 with a BA in American Studies and Education and with a Masters Degree in Education from UCSD in the fall of 2010. Coach Hales resides in Mira Mesa with his wife, Jena and toddler son, Coleman.

Carmy Cesaire, Jr., Assistant Head Coach, Varsity Offensive Coordinator, Varsity Quarterbacks

Carmy Cesaire Jr. returns for his fourth season as the Offensive Coordinator at La Jolla Country Day. Coach Cesaire spent 2012 as the JV Head Coach and JV offensive coordinator at Scripps Ranch High School after coaching the Torrey running backs and linebackers in 2011. From 2005-2011 Coach Cesaire coached football and basketball at his alma mater, DIII Fitchburg State University (Fitchburg, MA), coaching receivers, defensive backs and serving as co-defensive coordinator during the 2009 season. Coach Cesaire graduated from Fitchburg State with a degree in psychology while setting several FSU football single season and career records. Coach Cesaire, a two year captain, still holds records for career catches (132) and career yards (2036) and ranks 2nd in Falcon football history with 16 career touchdown receptions. Coach Cesaire also teaches at LJCDS in the PE Department. He lives in Scripps Ranch, CA with his wife Dianne, daughters Yazmine (17), Gabrielle (9) and son Quentin (7). Carmy’s younger brother, Jacques, played defensive end for 9 years with the San Diego Chargers.

Tyler Roach, Varsity Defensive Coordinator, Varsity Defensive and Offensive Line

Tyler Roach enters his first year at La Jolla Country Day as the Varsity Defensive Coordinator. Prior to joining our staff, Coach Roach spent the past 3 years as the Assistant Head Coach and Varsity Offensive Coordinator at La Jolla High School. In 2014, his offense broke multiple school and county records, including a County record 47 total Touchdown passes by QB Collin Rugg. Prior to La Jolla, Coach Roach spent one year at Scripps Ranch High School as the Varsity Defensive Coordinator and two years at University City High School. Coach Roach played his High School football locally at University City High School, where he was a two-way starter at Center and Middle Linebacker. He was an all- league player his junior and senior seasons, Team Captain, Team MVP, Academic All CIF, and was selected to play in the 2004 Alex Spanos All Star game. Coach Roach played his college football at Azusa Pacific University where he was a Fullback/H back. He graduated in 2009 with a degree in Sociology. He currently is an IT Supervisor at Tandem Diabetes Care and resides in Scripps Ranch, CA with his Wife Leslie and 1 year old son Marshall.

Robert Grasso, Academic Liaison, Special Teams Coordinator, Varsity Running Backs and Defensive Backs

Robert Grasso begins his 11th year on the Torrey football staff and 9th as varsity special teams coordinator. Coach Grasso spent 8 years as the JV Head Coach and has been a member of the Torrey baseball coaching staff for 16 years, helping the program to its first ever CIF championship in 2011. Coach Grasso graduated from La Jolla High School in 1989 where he played football and baseball. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1993 with a BA in Business Administration. Coach Grasso has taught at Country Day since 1999, currently teaching upper school history. Coach Grasso lives in Carmel Valley with his wife, Claudia, and their two children, Gabriella, an 9th grader this fall at LJCD, and Fourth Grader, Santino.

Kevin Reaume, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Varsity Offensive and Defensive Line

Coach Kevin Reaume enters his 25th year coaching football at LJCD and his 9th year as the program’s full-time strength and conditioning coach. Coach Reaume also teaches lower, middle and upper school physical education and serves as Country Day’s head men’s and women’s track and field coach. His track teams have captured 8 men’s and 5 women’s Coastal Conference championships. A native of Windsor, Ontario, Coach Reaume was a standout football, basketball and track athlete at F.J. Brennan High School where he was named to 2 All-City Football and 2 All-City Basketball teams and was a city, regional and provincial champion thrower in track. Coach Reaume played football at St. Frances Xavier University and graduated with a BS in Human Kinetics in 1985. While playing for the X-Men, Coach Reaume was a 2-time all-league defensive end and was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts of the C.F.L. 

Sean Bornhoeft, Varsity Wide Receivers and Defensive Backs

Sean Bornhoeft begins his 8th year as the Torrey’s receivers and cornerbacks coach. From 2010-2013, Coach Bornhoeft served as the JV team’s offensive coordinator. Coach Bornhoeft has also previously worked as a Torreys as a middle school flag football coach, JV men’s basketball coach, and assistant men’s lacrosse coach. Coach Bornhoeft also  works in the Middle School at LJCDS as a 7th grade English teacher. A native of Winnetka, Illinois, Coach Bornhoeft was a standout football and track and field athlete, earning all-conference honors in football. Coach Bornhoeft played wide receiver for the University of Illinois 1997-1999 and graduated with a BA in Political Science in 1999. He went on to earn a J.D. from Loyola University, Chicago School of Law in 2003 and a MSEd from Northwestern University in 2007. Coach Bornhoeft lives in Mission Hills with his wife, Julie and their two young daughters, Madelyn and Emma.

Cody Smith '05, Varsity Linebackers and Wide Receivers

Cody Smith '05 returns to La Jolla Country Day to coach with the Varsity Linebackers and Wide Receivers after graduating as a student-athlete in 2005. As a Varsity starter for 3 seasons, Coach Smith earned All-League honors in 2003 and 2004, while also being named Team Defensive MVP in 2003 and League Defensive Player of the Year his senior season in 2004. The Torreys won the 8-man CIF Championship all three of those seasons. After his career at LJCDS, Coach Smith attended the University of Arizona. After graduating in 2009, he followed a career playing professional football overseas in the European Leagues where he played in the top leagues of Germany, Norway and Poland. In 5 seasons abroad, Cody Smith earned 3 Most Valuable Player Awards, 4 All-Star Selections and was a 5-time Team Captain. He also played in 3 finals winning one National Title in Norway. In between seasons, Coach Smith came back to La Jolla Country Day to help coach the 8th Grade Flag Football Team as well as assisting with the basketball program. Coach Smith is excited to get back into Torrey blue football colors!

Indigo Dow, Junior Varsity Head Coach, JV Offensive Coordinator, JV Wide Receivers, JV Defensive Backs

Indigo Dow takes over as the JV Head Coach this year, in his second year coaching at La Jolla Country Day School. Coach Dow also works as the JV Offensive Coordinator and works with the JV receivers and cornerbacks. Coach Dow also teaches 7th and 8th grade History in the Middle School, as well as African Drumming. Coach Dow spent 2014 as the JV Head Coach and Varsity receivers and defensive backs coach at The Pingry School, after coaching the receivers and defensive backs at Pingry in 2013. Coach Dow graduated from Colby College in 2013, where he majored in American Studies and minored in Anthropology. Coach Dow played wide receiver at Colby College and was honored as a Colby Football Ironman in 2013. Coach Dow will be joining the Middle School History team at La Jolla this fall. 

Stephen Dixon, Junior Varsity Defensive Coordinator, JV Offensive/Defensive Line

Stephen Dixon enters his first year at La Jolla Country Day as the JV Defensive Coordinator and JV Offensive Line Coach. Prior to joining the Torrey family, Coach Dixon spent the past 3 years coaching in the San Diego American Youth Football and Cheer Organization where he was the Defensive Coordinator and Head Coach for the Mira Mesa Youth Football Association for 2 years and the Defensive Coordinator for the 14U Clairemont Hawks Youth Football Association for 1 year. In his 3 years in youth football he coached 2 playoff teams of which one those teams surrendered under 13 points per game all year. Coach Dixon played high school football locally at Scripps Ranch High School from 2004-2007 As a 3 year Varsity starter he was a two time Defensive Captain and was named Team  Defensive Back of the Year twice. He was also a 3 year Varsity Track and Field Athlete who was the Team MVP in 2007. Coach Dixon played College Football at Greenville College DIII where he started as a freshmen at corner in 2008. He resides in Mira Mesa, is a Media Planner and Buyer for Motivate Inc. When he isn’t working or coaching at the High School, he helps coach the La Jolla Pop Warner 8U team.

Christine Mitchell, Athletic Trainer

Christine Mitchell returns for her third year as Country Day’s Athletic Trainer. She has been involved in the profession of athletic training since high school when she was in San Pasqual’s Athletic Training Club. Christine graduated with her BS in Athletic Training from the University of South Carolina after which she completed her MS in Exercise Physiology at Boston University.  Throughout her education and professional career she has provided care for a large variety of teams including South Carolina’s Football and Basketball teams, the New England Revolution’s soccer development academy, Boston University’s field hockey team and San Diego State’s women’s soccer team. Christine currently resides in Escondido with her four-legged best friend Charlie.
